Athletes need to keep their body in mind, making sure they do all they can to prevent injuries to their knees, shoulders, and even their head. However, many don’t realize that their smiles are in danger as well. If you’re an athlete, it’s important to prevent as many dental issues as possible while you’re active. You can do so by doing the following things:

First, wear a mouthguard whenever you step on the court, field, or track. A mouthguard is a strong and reliable appliance that can protect your teeth and jaw from the hard, forceful objects that hit them during your game or match. If you don’t wear a mouthguard, there is a chance you’ll suffer an oral injury, like chipped, broken, or knocked-out teeth. Our dentist is pleased to offer custom mouth guards to help you preserve your healthy smile.

Second, avoid drinking sports drinks. Sports drinks have high amounts of sugar, which means they promote dental issues like tooth decay. These drinks are also highly acidic, which means they can erode your tooth enamel, causing tooth sensitivity and other dental problems. The best beverage to drink while you are participating in your sport or activity is water. If water isn’t satisfying in your strenuous workout, try drinking unsweetened coconut water.

Third, combat dry mouth as much as possible. Dry mouth is a common dental issue among athletes and it involves the inability to produce the proper and needed amount of saliva. When this happens, food particles and bacteria fail to be washed away and your oral cavity becomes vulnerable to dental issues. To help avoid this, frequently drink water and brush your teeth after your games and practices.

If you do these things, you’ll be on the right track toward having the top-notch oral health and smile you deserve while you participate in your sports and activities.
